FRAMING

Custom framed in maple.

CONDITION

Overall good and stable condition. One noticeable area of paint loss (less than one inch diameter) in the grey/purple brushstroke in the upper left quadrant. Other areas that appear to be minor losses, though very sporadic and commensurate with age. Areas of light paint application where primed canvas or base layer is slightly transparent (see green area, upper left quadrant) is most likely intentional on the part of the artist, but could also indicate that the canvas was re-stretched at an earlier time. Not examined under UV light.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Gabriel Godard (1933-2023)

Gabriel Godard, a self-taught painter, was born in 1933 in Delouze, France. Historically, Godard is considered to be a second generation member of the “École de Paris” (School of Paris). He began painting in 1950, creating mostly figurative works until around 1986, when he turned to abstraction exclusively.

His works have been acquired by the French government on behalf of the Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris and the Centre Pompidou. Godard’s work can be found in many private collections and institutions around the world, and he has amassed an extensive exhibition history over the past seven decades.

Godard died on December 4, 2023 in Vair-sur-Loire, France.
