ABOUT THE ARTIST

Deborah Feldman Cuyler (1935-1986)

Deborah Feldman Cuyler was born in New York in 1935. She graduated from Bennington College (VT) in 1956 and married classmate Richard Cuyler the following year. Best known for her large, expressive abstract paintings, Cuyler exhibited around the New York area during her active years and was reviewed by The New York Times.

Deborah and Richard lived in New York until 1961, at which time they relocated upstate to Saratoga Springs, where Richard joined the faculty of Skidmore College. As with many female artists of the day, Cuyler was forced to juggle the demands of motherhood and spousal support, to the detriment of her own burgeoning career.

Tragically, Cuyler passed away of a cerebral hemorrhage in 1986 at the age of 51.
